What is a basic bank account

With a basic bank account, you can have your income paid in and manage your money with the Barclays app, online, in a branch and by phone. You can make payments, withdraw cash and set up regular payments like Direct Debits and standing orders. Unlike our other accounts, you can’t apply for an overdraft or use a chequebook.

Unpaid Direct Debits and standing orders

If a Direct Debit or standing order is due and there isn’t enough money in your account, we’ll stop the payment.

We may decide to cancel permanently some or all of your Direct Debits or standing orders if you don't ensure that there is enough money in your account when they’re due to be paid. If we do this, we'll write to you and let you know.

Charging dates

Most charges are applied at the time the service is provided.

Pack fees are taken from your account on the first working day of the month.

How to apply

Our Barclays Basic Current Account is only available to certain people in certain circumstances. The application will determine your eligibility, and will let you know what account we can offer you.
