Standard Recruitment Process

With so many different roles within Barclays, there is no typical recruitment process and we use a number of different methods to find the right people. For most jobs, we use a minimum of two of the following:

  • CV/Application form
  • Telephone interview (for branch network and contact centre roles)
  • Competency-based/Structured Interview
  • Additional Exercise (Role play/presentation/group exercise)
  • Assessment Centre

CV/application form
When sending us a CV or filling in an application from, it's important to put your best foot forward and make sure the information you give is tailored to the role you're applying for.

The interview
We use both competency-based (sometimes known as 'structured') and experience-based (known as 'business line') interviews. Competency-based interviews are based around the specific skills and behaviours you'll need to do the job, while business line interviews will focus much more on your qualifications and experience.

Before the interview, we'll tell you the kind of skills we're looking for. You can prepare by thinking of previous experience that might be relevant - e.g. times you've worked with customers or managed a team of people.

Additional exercises
We also use additional exercises such as role plays, group exercises and presentations. Role plays tend to be based on typical situations you can find yourself in at work, such as dealing with a difficult customer. We know how difficult it can be to act naturally in a role play, but really try to imagine you're in that situation. Sometimes the exercises can be prepared - such as a presentation on how you would approach the role - while others you will be asked to prepare on the day.

Assessment centres
For some jobs, we use both interviews and assessment centres. If an assessment centre is part of your selection process, you will be given plenty of notice in advance, as well as a brief on what will happen, and how to prepare. If you want any more information prior to the event, just ask your recruitment contact. Assessment centres can include role plays, presentations, group work, problem solving and other exercises. Again, confidence is key, along with any preparation you can do before the day.
