What happens if I miss a mortgage payment?
It’s important to make your mortgage payments by the date they’re due. If you’re worried, call us as soon as you can to see how we can help.
Your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on your mortgage.
We’re here to help
Talk to us on 0333 202 7580 if you’re worried you might not make a mortgage payment (or if you think you’ve missed a payment because of a problem, like a recent change to your bank details).
We’re here Monday to Friday from 7am to 8pm, and Saturday to Sunday from 7am to 5pm*.
We want to help you manage the situation, so you can avoid the serious consequences of missing mortgage payments. We also need to let you know what those consequences are.
- Missing mortgage payments might affect your ability to borrow money from any lenders in the future
- If you have a joint mortgage with someone, or a guarantor, they’ll be liable for the money you owe
- If you keep missing payments, we may start legal proceedings to recover the money you owe – that could, as a last resort, lead to us repossessing and selling your home
- If the proceeds from the sale don’t cover what you owe, you’ll still need to repay the shortfall
Some of our mortgages give you the option to reduce or stop your monthly payments temporarily if you’ve previously overpaid on your mortgage. You'll see this option in Online Banking if you’re eligible.
