See your recurring card payments

A recurring card payment, sometimes called a continuous payment authority (CPA), is a regular payment taken from your account using your card details, instead of your account number and sort code.

The payment instruction is with the company you’re paying, not your bank. This means they can charge fixed or varying amounts, and don’t have to specify when they’re going to take the payment.

They’re often used for subscription payments to streaming services, gym memberships and insurance policies. It’s usually the type of payment you’re charged after a free trial expires for an online service.

When you get a new debit card

If you already have recurring payments set up with your debit card from us, we’ll try to update your details with those retailers when you get a new card.

Visa will inform the company of your new card details if your subscription is with most major retailers.

You’ll need to contact other retailers directly to update your details.

Cancel a recurring card payment

You need to contact the retailer to cancel a recurring card payment.

You can raise a dispute if you’ve cancelled a recurring payment with the retailer, but they take another payment. You can do this by selecting the payment in your transaction and choosing ‘Help with this transaction’.

Block a recurring card payment from being taken in the future

You can cancel a recurring card payment by talking to the retailer.

You can also call us and ask us to block future recurring card payments for a particular retailer. You’ll need to call three days before the next payment is due to make sure it won’t be taken.

The block will last for 25 months, or until you unblock it, which you can do at any time by calling us. You’ll still need to pay retailers any money you owe.
