Here are some things you should know before you read the rest of this document:
- These rules explain how you can qualify for cashback on eligible home improvements through your Barclayloan. You should read them together with your Barclayloan Terms and Conditions.
- If there are any inconsistencies between these rules and your Barclayloan Terms and Conditions, these rules will apply in relation to the cashback.
- Just so you know, when we refer to "we", or "us" in these rules, we mean Barclays Bank UK PLC.
1. About The Greener Home Loan
The Greener Home Loan allows you to claim cashback when you use your Barclayloan to pay for eligible home improvements. There are three cashback tiers, depending on the size of the loan:
Loan amount |
Cashback amount |
---|---|
£1,000 - £1,999 |
£50 |
£2,000 - £4,999 |
£100 |
£5,000 - £50,000 |
£250 |
You can only claim cashback once per loan.
Cashback is only available on Greener Home Loans, so you cannot claim cashback on Barclayloans you already have or home improvements you’ve already made. However, if you are topping up an existing loan, you will be able to claim cashback on the additional amount as long as it is for an eligible home improvement. For example, if you have an existing £40,000 loan and you borrow an additional £2,500 for home improvements, you can claim a cashback reward for the additional £2,500 (so £100).
You can only claim cashback once per property. We will only pay the cashback if you’re not in breach of your loan agreement.
2. Eligibility
Are you eligible?
- You have to be a UK resident and at least 18 years old.
- You need to have an existing Barclays current account before you apply for the loan.
- You need to spend at least 90% of the loan on eligible home improvements. When calculating this percentage, you can include installation costs, the cost of any materials and VAT.
- The home improvements have to be on your main home address. You can’t get cashback for improvements to buy-to-let properties, second homes or holiday homes.
Are the improvements eligible?
To claim the cashback reward, your home improvements need to fit into one of the categories below. The improvements have to be new energy efficient features to your home – changes to existing energy efficient features are not eligible for cashback
Improvement method |
Improvement types |
---|---|
Low carbon heating |
|
Solar energy |
|
Insulation (except spray foam insulation) |
|
Doors and windows |
|
Home EV charging |
|
The improvements also have to be installed by a VAT registered professional installer or tradesperson. For solar energy and low carbon heating, they should be certified by the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (commonly known as MCS). MCS is an independent organisation that sets standards for low-carbon products and installations used to produce energy from renewable sources. You can check if an installer is MCS certified on the MCS website (https://mcscertified.com/find-an-installer/).
3. How to apply
You apply from the general Barclayloan application page on our website. For “loan purpose”, make sure you select “Greener home”.
Before starting the process, you should think about what home improvements you want to make and obtain a quote from an eligible tradesperson. You may want to get a few different quotes before you settle on one.
Remember, you need to use at least 90% of your loan for eligible home improvements to claim cashback!
If you’re successful, we’ll get in touch with details of the cashback scheme and let you know how to make a claim.
4. Claiming the cashback reward
From the day your loan application is accepted, you have 6 months to claim your cashback reward. We will email you with details of how to claim the cashback.
You can do this once your home improvements have been completed by notifying us that you are ready to claim and uploading your supplier receipts using the link in our email. The receipts must include:
- Your full name
- The receipt date
- The address of the property being improved, which must match the home address you listed on your Barclayloan
- The type of eligible home improvement made. You may need to ask your supplier to clearly note on their receipt what has been improved – for example, where you have replaced single glazing, this needs to be itemised on the receipt.
- The name and VAT number of the tradesperson who completed the home improvements
- The cost of the home improvements
We will then review the receipts to make sure they make up at least 90% of your loan amount and that the tradesperson or supplier involved meets our eligibility standards. You’ll receive an email from us confirming either that:
- You’ve qualified for cashback
- You may have qualified for cashback, but we need more details
- You haven’t qualified for cashback, and why
If you’ve qualified for cashback, congratulations! We’ll issue the full amount to your current account in one go within 30 days from the day you receive our confirmation email.
If we request more details, we’ll tell you what kind of evidence we’re looking for and how to submit it.
If you haven’t qualified for cashback and you think we’ve made a mistake, contact us and we’ll help explain why we think you don’t qualify. You’ll also have the opportunity to submit more details.
